Baldwin UFSD Superintendent Hosts “Coffee & Conversation” with Families

PTAs Share Thoughts and Dreams with Mr. Anthony Mignella

This past August, Superintendent Mr. Anthony Mignella began his tenure by engaging in open discussions with the Baldwin PTAs. As an educator, he understands teaching and learning are reciprocal processes, much like effective communication. Thus, he decided to launch a Listen & Learn Series called “Coffee & Conversation.”

“Our commitment to creating a school district that is innovative and future-focused is one that needs to include our families as partners,” said Mr. Mignella. “These open discussions are invaluable, and I am grateful for this opportunity to engage directly with our community and look forward to continuing these important conversations to ensure that the needs of every student are fully supported.”

The inaugural meeting was a resounding success, bringing together each PTA unit in an informal setting to discuss their aspirations for the district and their children. The session provided a platform for representation from each school to share their thoughts, hopes, and dreams while Mr. Mignella listened attentively and took notes!

Following a brief “meet and greet” with Mr. Mignella, complemented by coffee, tea, and baked treats, each PTA jotted down their thoughts on sheets of poster paper, which were then displayed on the walls of the cafeteria for easy viewing. During what is known as a “gallery walk” in the education world, all participants toured the room to read each other’s ideas and feedback. The collaborative effort will help the district in implementing any necessary improvements.

The following key themes emerged from the event based on what was presented during the gallery walk:

  • Empowerment, empathy, and collaboration as core values for shaping students’ experiences.
  • Preparedness and innovation, ensuring learners have the tools for the future.
  • Unity, diversity, and inclusion, with representation and valuing parent input seen as essential.
  • Rigorous education dedicated and caring teachers, and high standards with accountability.
  • Desire for clear, transparent, and multilingual communication between the district, families, and staff.
  • Investment at the elementary level including more “field trips” and more afterschool enrichment programs.
  • Opportunities for students to learn beyond the classroom through cultural events, school trips, and community engagement.
  • Emphasis on social-emotional learning, safety, and a nurturing environment.
  • Support for family partnerships and programs that connect elementary students across schools before they start middle school.

Overall, parents expressed their dedication to the community, advocating for enriching experiences for students and praising the district’s efforts to engage in open communication. Many echoed importance of transparency and partnership between families and the district, envisioning schools that nurture every child, promote community pride, and prepare students for future challenges through both academic excellence and personal growth.

The district looks forward to continuing these open conversations and collaborations with families to ensure Baldwin schools continue to excel.
